I dont know what you mean by a purely client side implementation as Jquery is also "purely clientside" The Jquery implementation takes the picture, flips it and adds a opacity filter to it, In IE your script has a unwanted side effect of "32 images downloading etc." , In firefox the results are surprisingly smooth.
